Medical mission

In the Philippines, infant mortality is 35 per thousand live births (3.5%), while the under five mortality rate is 48 per thousand live births (4.8%). The instances of sickness amongst infants and children are therefore much higher than this. Survival and well being of under five children is dependent on their nutrition, the care that their parents are able to give them, and the kind of health services available to them in the health facilities in their respective communities.

Studies have shown that malnutrition acting together with infectious diseases especially at an early age is a major cause of mortality among Filipino children. The cycle of malnutrition and infection perpetuates itself and results in death or mental and physical disabilities. The five major diseases of children are: pneumonia, diarrhea, malnutrition, measles and malaria. Together, these five diseases account for 70% of child morbidity and mortality in the country.

Many of these illnesses are preventable or treatable through early recognition, simple treatments and improved hygiene. Our focus is as much about education and prevention as providing treatments that are within our capacity to provide. The four areas in which we work are:

  1. Providing basic medical care clinics (including basic medications)
  2. Nutritional, hygiene and first aid education
  3. Working with other organisations sharing resources to effectively administer medical aid
  4. Meeting specifically identified Children’s life-threatening, mobility and standard of living medical needs

JCI’s Medical goal is to see a significant sustainable reduction in the instances of infection/contraction of preventable communicable diseases through quality of life education programs (nutrition and hygiene) and medical clinics.

Why we need your help

Sadly, Daniel Orlango a young Filipino boy with various serious illnesses died in October 2006 before he could receive the necessary medical procedures that would have saved his life. See the Latest News Article for more information about Daniel. This event reminds us of the importance to arrange funding and delivery of medical services quickly to those in need.

Time is of the essence. If you think you can help in any way in this area please contact Sharon at JCI.
